Five key points on Sea Level Rise, representing hot topics in science, have also crucial effects on society.
Sea Level Rise is the rise of mean global sea level. From the mid-19th century till today it’s increasing and now is growing at the rate of about 30 cm per century. The main cause is Global Warming, but in some local situations subsidence also contributes. Due to sea level rise, coastal areas turn into lagoons and swamps, river floods have larger impacts, effects of storms, coastal erosion and tsunami are amplified. Lagoon cities such as Venice are submerged more and more frequently.
There is no more time to lose. We must act quickly, we must act now. How? Reducing greenhouse gases, adapting human settlements, and developing eco-friendly solutions to protect areas exposed to this hazard.
